Double Checking

If you’re a homeowner, you’ve no doubt had a miserable experience with a contractor at least once in your life. Whether you were just trying to get a part of your home touched up or you’ve had major work done on your house, it seems like most contractors have an inborn ability to muck up your plans.

In my case, I had a contractor that nearly took down the whole house, and I’m not exaggerating about that. After a cursory inspection of my kitchen and living room, the guy declared that none of the walls that separated the two rooms were load baring, and his team proceeded to begin knocking them down and putting up a little column that could barely support my weight as a decoration.

Fast forward about two weeks after the month-long job was done. My son noticed that his closet doors (situated right above where the now removed walls were) were no longer closing, and indeed weren’t even connected to the floor anymore. He attached a line of string stretching from one end of the arch that took the place of the walls from the new column to the outside wall of the house and, sure enough, the second floor was now sagging about two inches below where it had been!

Needless to say I was furious and terribly frightened of my house collapsing. I called the contractor up, and after having to send pictures of the problem to convince him it even existed, he also panicked, and so began the week and a half-long process of fixing the error.

My main mistake was going with a contractor I didn’t really know. What I should have done is listen to my friends and gone with Inspired Remodels, Inc., who had done some extensive and high quality work for them previously.

Situated in Lake Forest, Inspired has been providing insanely high quality remodels for bathrooms, kitchens, and any other rooms you can think of for years. If you don’t believe me, you can take a quick look at their reviews on Yelp and Google, where they maintain an incredible rating for a contracting firm:

About two years ago, Inspired Remodels remodeled my kitchen.  So, when I was ready to remodel my bathroom, they were my first pick.  I am so happy with the result.  They did a beautiful job, and the process was so painless.  They gave me a schedule and were able to stick to it perfectly, even completing the job earlier than predicted!  Each set of workers showed up on time, did quality work, and cleaned up thoroughly.  I was able to select my materials at their showroom, which made the process easy and stress-free.  Jason, who supervised the project, was very responsive whenever I had a question.  Both brothers, Joe and Jason, are very professional and easy to work with.

After spending time looking for a contractor to renovate our master bathroom, laundry and power bath, we settled on Inspired Remodels and I’m so glad we did! From start to finish every single person that worked in our home was professional, considerate and communicated with us throughout the process. I am rather “particular” about things being just right and they went above and beyond to ensure our satisfaction. Joe and Collin were very patient with me during the selection process and Jason was responsive and made me feel at ease with any questions I had along the way. The tradesmen were all outstanding but I need to give a special shoutout to Haime and Rudy, Mark and Ulysses, for their attention to detail and the long hours they put into making our home beautiful.  Thank you, thank you! I highly recommend using IR if you have high expectations – they will be met!

The lesson in this is clear: don’t go with your gut. Go with a highly recommended firm, even if they are a little bit farther away from you or charge just a smidge higher. You can’t beat quality and workmanship.
