While describing locations or items as ‘jewels’ is an overdone method of advertising their value, every once in a while you find something that is worthy of the monicker. The neighborhood of La Jolla, located in the northwestern reaches of San Diego, is one such community.
Ranging from a rugged coastline to rolling hills covered in vibrant coastal scrub and dotted with outcroppings of dusty sandstone, the natural beauty of the area is only matched by the manmade landscapes cresting the hillsides. Expansive gardens and yard spaces comprised of everything from local flora to vivacious tropical greenery are a typical sight walking down nearly every neighborhood street in the area, along with an inviting floral scent drifting in the breeze.
The locals take pride in the curation of these manmade landscapes, and seem to compete with one another in how intricate and lavish they can make their outdoor environments. Some of the most impressive work we saw during a recent tour was revealed to have come from a single company, which was introduced as ‘TP Landscape Company‘. When we looked it up later, we realized that was short for Torrey Pines Landscape Company, named after a pine tree that originated here in the coastal reaches of southern California.
